Blog EntryCrochet Hat with tatted butterfly and flowersMar 23, '08 1:51 AM
for everyone

Mom wanted a hat and I finished one today.  The hat pattern is from Patterns by Dot.  I used Red Heart yarn in white.  The flowers and butterfly are my original patterns.  I used El Beida cotton perle #8 in different shades of pinks and reds.  The patterns will be on my web site soon.  I made a smaller version of the hat in "Watercolors" for my sister Letty's niece.  Tomorrow I'll take photos of that one.  I made it with a smaller hook and placed one butterfly on it.

You can find the rest of the photos in this photo album.

Made for mom. Flowers and butterflies are original patterns. Hat from Patterns by Dot

This lovely heart is a design by Teresa Wood and she kindly shared it with the Online Tatting Class on Monday.  This semester the main topic will be Block Tatting.  You can find the information about how to make this technique here.  The pattern of the heart can be found at the Class site and on Teresa's blog.  The long threads I left them so mom can sew it to a bag or shirt.

In combination with the heart I made mom's name using Teri Dusenbury's pattern of the alphabet with a butterfly.  I also left long ends so it's easier to sew but I did a little of PSP and erased the ends.    Just for fun.  lol  They're n ot very big, under 2 inches each one.

The thread is El Beida #12 is a very bright pink, almost fushia.

Last night after playing for so long on JibJab I made this little butterfly.  The pattern is at Iris Niebach's blog.  It's a small butterfly (like 1 inch) and made pretty quick.  The blue thread is Miquita and the yellow is DMC Petra.

The pattern can be found here.

Forty Original Designs in Tatting

The original pattern is made of several motifs tatted apart and the joined together.  Using 2 shuttles is possible to make it in 2 rounds.

Abbreviations:
R: Ring
Ch: Chain
- : Picot
LP: Long Picot
+ : Join to...
TOCL: Thrown-off Clover

Materials:
2 Shuttles

Instructions:

Round 1:
R: 12 (LP) 4 (LP) 12.

CH: 12.
R: 10 - 10 - 10 - 10.
CH:   6 (- 6) x 12.   Join to the base of the ring.
CH: 12.
TOCL:
    R: 8 + (to the last picot on long chain) 8 - 8 - 8.
    R: 8 + 8 - 8 - 8.
    R: 8 + 8 - 8 - 8.
CH: 12.
R: 10 - 10 - 10 - 10.
CH: 6 + (to the last picot of the TOCL) 6 (- 6) x 11.  Join to the base of the ring.
CH: 12.  Join to the base of the 1st ring.

Cut.

Round 2:
Join between the 2nd and 3rd ring of TOCL.
CH: 4 - 2 - 2 - 4.
R:  6 - 6.
CH: 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4.
R: 6 + 6.
CH: 4 - 2 - 2 - 4.

R: 8 + (to shared picot of the 6's ring) 8 + (to middle picot of last ring on TOCL) 8.  Join to last free picot on long chain.
CH: 4 - 2 - 2 - 4.  Skip one picot and join to the next. } x 2.
CH: 4 - 2 - 2 - 4.
R: 6 + (skip one picot, join next) 6.
CH: 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4.
R: 6 + (to the same picot as last ring) 6.
CH: 4 - 2 - 2 - 4.  Skip one picot, join next.
CH: 4 - 2- 2 - 4.  Join to the neck with an alligator join.

Mirror the other side of the butterfly.

Note: This version I notice that the body has a big space, so I tried to fill it with another ring.  After making the chain after the TOCL, make a ring of 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 + (to the base of the big ring) 3 - 3 - 3 - 3.  Then continue making the other big ring and keep working the pattern in the same way.

A copy of the pattern in PDF is attached as well as the original pattern.

Blog EntrySome butterfliesDec 2, '07 4:18 AM
for everyone

Well, not all is cookies around here.  I made my homework from this week.  These butterflies are designed by Mary Maynard and they were discussed last Tuesday in a special event class at the Online Tatting Class.  The patterns can be found here.  Today I'll be discussing them in Spanish for my fellow tatters. They're pretty easy to make.  The only one that it's a little tricky is the 1st (top, left) because one of the rings is in a half moon shape, but it's just a matter of twisting the ring before closing it.  A mistake that a lot of use do sometimes anyway.  lol

I still have to write a pattern for another butterfly.  I'm re-writing a pattern from 1920 (I think) to make it in one pass instead of making some motifs and then joining them.  I made the butterfly already.  I just need to write the instructions.

for everyone

Yesterday, while watching Desperation (from Stephen King, I got it after looking for it a long time) I made this butterfly.  It's from Ruth Perry's Celtic Tatting book.  I have done it before and I still love it.  I even took a class with Ruth at Palmetto where she was teaching this cutie and other Celtic patterns.  I'm a big fan of Celtic, art, music, folklore, anything Celtic.  No, I'm not Irish nor have Irish family that I know.  My ancestor came from Spain and probably Arabia.  But anyway I like Celtic stuff.   The butterfly is pretty simple.  For me the most difficult part is to make the head.  After the head is done the rest is piece of cake!  Mmm...  Chocolate cake....  *ahem*  Back to tatting...

I used the Egyptian cotton perle #8 in pink and purple.  The blue is also cotton perle but Chinese!  I didn't notice it was Chinese until last night when I was looking for the label and didn't find it, then I noticed the tab inside the ball.  I don't like this blue thread because I think it's old and breaks too easily when I'm working.  I tend to tat very tight and if the thread is old or fragile it will break often and my work won't be smooth and pretty.  At least last night didn't break.

I still have plenty of thread on the shuttle, so I'll make another and invert the colors.

I made this butterfly a couple of days ago and didn't post it. I think was the day before the "Numb" day...

Anyway. This is a butterfly I designed for one of my books. I used gold beads and bugles and a cream thread. I love to make this butterfly. I think it's cute and quick to work.

Blog EntryBeaded Hanging Cluny ButterflySep 22, '07 12:15 AM
for everyone

Well, the migraine this morning wasn't so bad and I tatted this butterfly that I wanted to do a couple of days ago.

It's a design I made when I learned how to make hanging clunies. But I didn't stop just making regular hanging clunnies. NO!!! I complicate my life making them beaded. I like the results. I use Ruth Perry's EZ way and I think I spend less than 1 hours to finish the butterfly.

I used the same cream thread with pink beads. The pattern is been tested and when it's ready I'll post it for everyone.

Yesterday I accompanied mom to Walmart and I got this x-stitch project.  I have been looking for it for a few weeks and I got it now.  I have made only small x-stitch projects, so this will be a huge challenge for me.  I hope that it looks like the one in the pic when I finish.  Wish me luck!  LOL  Image

I forgot to post the lil' dragonfly that I made from Deb (DS9 Designs).  It worked extremely fast.  I think I spent lees than 15 minutes tatting it.  It's so adorable with his huge buggy eyes!  Another pattern for the "I must buy" list.  Well, I'm not going to buy the pattern but I'll buy the beads to make some of them.

The butterflies are a pattern re-written by Carol L. (I think) and was discussed on the Online Tatting Class.  Searching for the link.........  Here it is:  http://www.jamescgroves.com/mdtatter/deacon/deacon.htm  Oops, was Carolyn Grooves.  Anyway, it's a pattern that can be easily variated using beads in different places.  I used gold beads but I think they definitively don't match with the white and turquoise thread.  Ugh!  My bad, but they were the nearest beads when I was working.  I'll probably make a few more to decorate a sweater.
