NeedleDreams' posts with tag: doilies
On March I participated of a Doily Exchange and I didn't post the photos until now. This doily is from Aileen Chia. She is from Singapore. Also sent me some beads and a lovely postcard. Still I haven't scan them because they're still working on mom's pc. The doily is so lovely and goes really well with a Lotus I made a few months ago. Thanks so much Aileen and I hope one day you can come back to PR and we can meet in person! I got another one, form Valerie Cho, but I'll post it tomorrow. Now I need to lay down because the pain medicine is knocking me early!

Not bad, eh? Only 2 hours to whip this one. I guess I haven't forget how to make crochet Bruges. The original Bruges lace is made in bobbin lace but this crochet imitation is famous and pretty none the less. I still have thread for a second one. Geesh! These threads don't want to finish! lol
Now I'll take a rest and cook something to eat. I'm famish!
Yesterday hubby got me the air ticket to travel. I'll be leaving Egypt on March 11th and will travel directly to NY. Still I need to buy the ticket from NY to PR. I hope to do that tonight or at least the week. I'll arrive to NY around 4 pm and the next available and affordable trip to PR is at 9 pm. I don't want to stay in NY one night because the flight is booked so I have to do it fast. Not that I don't like NY but been alone in NY is boring. None of my friends live near the JFK airport. Or is there someone that lives near the airport? In that case I can spent a couple of days. So now that it's official the trip my insomnia and ne rves will go from bad to worst. *sigh* It's something that always happens. The packing, the things to buy for others, the cleaning of the house... Really makes me sick all this. One or two days before the trip I totally stop sleeping. I have been up to 72 hours awake. And no, I barely sleep on the plane. I snore and I'm ashame of it. May be I can snooze like 10 minutes or so, but that's not really sleeping. I'm trying to keep myself calm and I'm crocheting. Today I finished another crochet doily. This one is oval with 2 pineapples at the end. It took me like 12-15 hours to finish, taking a lot of rest between rounds. I don't want the carpal tunnel flare up again. The pattern is from a Decorative Crochet magazine #59. The thread is Melanie #10, color #161; a variegated thread with pink, lavender, blue, mint green and white. Here is the magazine photo so you can see well the design. I have some thread left and I'm making a small crochet Bruge doily. I hope the thread is enough. I haven't make crochet Bruge in years!!! Let see if I can get it again.
I joined an exchange. It's been a long time that I don't do exchanges, mostly because the postal service here in Egypt is so bad. So now that I'll travel to PR I decided to join again the exchanges 'cause I can mail them from there easily and without the worries of the package been open or lost in the Twilight Zone. So I made the one above but the chains still need some tweaking. Some of them overlap and I had to steam it to lay flat because it was cupping a little. I think I need to work with my picots. The joining ones are like "disappearing", each time are smaller and smaller. I still need to hide the ends of that one. This one I just finished it and steam it. The pattern is from Iris Niebach's book Tatted Doilies. It's a lovely book. This one is called Nora. I used cotton perle #8 in raspberry and white and it measures 6 1/2 inches. I have 2 partners and I think I'll repeat this one using other colors for the other partner. Hmm... One of the partners mentioned that she likes cool colors. What colors are cool?
I have been working in this doily for almost 2 weeks. It's a free pattern from Coats and Clark. You can download it from them or the PDF attachment in this post. I like the design. Mantilla is Spanish for "veil" and it resemblance the old veils that women used to go to church. The thread I used is a new one for me. It's Helwan, a 100% Egyptian cotton. The thickness is a little bit more than the regular #10 we use to crochet but not quite the #5. It's very soft to work and I liked the result. I took so long to make it because I'm having problems with my eyesight and I was able to crochet only a few hours per day using the natural sunlight. Also the pattern is written in a confusing way in some parts and I had to "frog" several rounds twice or thrice. But yesterday afternoon I finished it. I need to wash it to see if the dye wash-off,, but while working with it my hands didn't get black so I think it's okay. Also I need to steam it 'cause it's a little ruffled. This pattern is definitively for an intermediate to advance crocheter. The total size of the doily is 18" and I used a 2.50mm hook. Detail of the center Attachment: LC1555.pdf

This is a crocheted doily. It measures 16" from point to point. The thread is 100% cotton, size #10 and the color is variegated pastel tones of pink, yellow and blue.

I just finished last night a crochet doily. It's been awhile since the last time I crocheted and the bug bite me. lol The doily measures 16 inches from th etip of the picot to the other side picot. I need to steam it so the points are straights. I hate to do so many picots. I guess this was the medicine. Yuck! I almost didn't made that last round. But now I'm happy with the results.
Sorry for the blurry photo but I don't have anything big enough to make contrast. Here is a detailed photo.
The thread I used is Melanie size #10. It's a Brazilian thread. Very soft. The color is variegated and has pastel tones of pink, yellow and blue. The pattern is shown with a duo of smaller versions but I only had a ball and it went almost complete. When I travel I'll try to find the same thread and make the companions. Now I have a another variegated but with blue hues. Will see what I'll make. If someone is interested on this doily, check my Market Listing here on Multiply.
Yesterday I started this small doily from Jan Stawasz. It's almost 6 inches from the long chain to the other side. I used Altin Basak #10 in a variegated pink color. The color is a little darker than what is shown on the photo. I'm making another one exactly the same and will finish it this night. Then I want to make another a little bigger that compliments these 2 and make a trio.
On a personal note. I'm not doing very well from the asthma. Yesterday I started using theophylline to help with the nebulizer therapies. The inhaler is not working more than 2 hours. I have been in bed all day for 3 days now. Hubby came after school and made dinner and went to finish a plaster work he's doing. I feel sleepy and it's only 6 pm. I think I'll take a nap until next therapy and then watch some movies. I'm so tire I can't do nothing... At least tatting is keeping me company.
See ya later if I have the energy.
Well, last year I ended it miserable because of the burnt hand but now I feel much better, the hand is not hurting and last night (I mean this morning) I finished the doily. Well it has another round but I find that I like it this way.
It measures 12 inches in diameter. I haven't iron it so it looks a little ruffled, but it lays perfectly flat. The colors don't look as bad now that is finished. The blue is Miquita and the yellow is DMC Petra. It's an interesting combination of materials because Petra is a cotton perle and Miquita is a mercerized thread. Both threads have their own texture. I prefer the Miquita over the Petra but unfortunately that's a thread that is not easily found as Petra. Also the price is different. Miquita comes in balls of 50 grams for almost $5 and the Petra comes in 100 grams balls for $3. You do the math!
I had plenty of thread on the shuttles and made a few small motifs.
Here is a small bookmark using the Miquita in white and blue. Here is another small motif using the same threads. This is the center motif of the next doily I'll make. It's a square doily with a very interesting design. But this time I'll use one color: ecru. All this was made like in 2 hrs this morning (around 3 am, sleepless night again!) while watching TV and listening to hubby's snores. lol All of these are now comfy in the Tatting Box, taking a nap. I think I'll do the same now. But before I'll sketch some ideas for tatting that I have been having in the last 3 days. Looks like 2008 will be a good year for tatting!
Remember the pretty Polish Doily? Gosh! I have never had so much trouble making a doily! Really. Each Round I have started at least 2 times and I have made only 4 rounds out of 6. I think I'll just going to stop here and leave it as it is. Right now it measures 4 1/2" and is perfect to mount on a CD or a brass ring and use it as suncatcher. There are 2 rounds more but I'm thinking if I'll do it or not. Now I noticed that the pattern says using cordonet #10 but I don't have any and used cotton perle #8. Usually I don't care too much about the material specified on a pattern because usually I don't find the same thread, but may be this pattern really needs a cordonet to make it work. For now, this little doily is going to the box!
Here is what I have work until now. I should have more but the pattern is making me crazier. Each round I have had to started twice because the ds counting don't make sense and the rounds cup. So I'm practically making my own count. The 3rd round ruffled a little but the 4th round is taming it.
I'll take a break now and read some mail and later try to translate next Sunday's lesson.
See ya later.
I started this one last night after the last one, but I couldn't finish it 'cause my sister Letty was online and wanted to play Scrabble. This is using the same thread and the pattern is in the same book like last one. I still have some thread left. May be I can make some coasters. I need at least a couple to put here in the desk. I always have a bottle of water near and I don't want the desk to be damage with the water. It's a very cheap desk. lol
I'm a little sore because of the crochet so I think I'll be tatting some now.
This is a crochet doily I have been working all day. It's made with an burn orange thread called Melanie, a Brazilian thread. I like to work with it. It's soft and comes in a lot of colors. Pretty economic too. I easily find it in Puerto Rico. This was one of the ones that mom sent me. There's is enough for a smaller doily. May be I can repeat it until the 1st "solid" round. I don't have a measuring tape but I think it's around 12 inches diameter. The pattern is from a French magazine called "1000 Mailles Crochet Decorations".

This is the doily I'll enter in the "Mixed Media" Category. Well, I have to check the registrations 'cause I frankly can't remember if I registered in this category. Anyway the doily is finished. I need to iron it a little bit so some rings lay straight. This category is not like in the past year of tatting with other laces, but using different materials in the tatting. I used DMC Cebelia #30 in pink and Venus Nylon Hand Quilting in white. The Cebelia is a cotton thread so I used 2 different materials. The pattern is from Ms. Teiko Fujito published in an English Tranlation by Lacis in "Tatted Fashion". I love Ms. Fujito's patterns. They're somewhat out of the common and often use more than 2 shuttles and plenty of color and beads. I have my eyes in starting a shawl from the same book. I still need to decide what color of thread I'll use. I don't want to make it white because I know that when I finish I'll need to wash it in cloro. LOL Or may be I can use different colors and make it like a rainbow that way if certain color finishes and I can't find more then I can use other color. But this project will be for later on. I still need to finish other projects. Tonight is the last night for me to tat and I need to do my "Celtic Entry" and mount the "Scene Entry". So I think will be tat-a-tat all night.
This doily will be enter in the "Fine Thread" category. It's also from A frivolite magazine but right now I can't remember which number. The thread I used is Oren Bayan #70 in white. I love to work in fine threads and this thread is excellent for tatting. I still have some left and will keep it in reserve. Somewhere I hear that the thread is not made anymore. :-( Anyway... Tomorrow I'll be washing and blocking the projects that I have finished and then try to finish some more. Tomorrow is a day that I don't have any appointment, so I'm planning to tat ALL DAY LONG!!!
This is the doily that I'll present at Palmetto's. The pattern is from Frivolite #3 by Realce, a Spanish magazine about Tatting. I used DMC Petra #8 in white, light yellow and peach. The pattern has another 2 final rounds but I didn't make them because I run out of white. Now I have white again but I like the doily as it's now. I made the doily last year while in Egypt but I didn't have time to send it to last year competition so I'll submit it now. I really feel proud of this doily!
Here is the doily that Kate sent me. Isn't it gorgeous!? I love the color too. The pattern is from Nancy from the Be-Stitched.com and it's on her "Free Pattern" section. I have been thinking in making this doily too but there are some other projects in turn to be finished. Soon my darling... Soon I'll tat you! LOL The doily arrived home when I was in the hospital and mom brought it with some Cala Lilies on a vase. So the doily was under the flowers and the whole thing looked awsome! It really gave a nice homely touch to the hospital room. Thanks Kate for this beautiful doily!
