Yay!  I'm back participating in Friday Five!!!  This week's theme is Five
things on your "to do before you die" list.  I think this one is easy for me.  I made a list of things I would love to do in my life.  Here are 5 of them:

  1. Have a family of my own
  2. Loose some pounds (I'm working on it!)
  3. Have my own house or a permanent place where to live.  Traveling is fun but moving is horrible!
  4. Become a recognized lacemaker (author and teacher).
  5. Make "Hajj".  I'm Muslim and that is the pilgrimage that Muslim do to Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.
Inshallah (God Willing) I know that I can accomplish some of them, someday...  With help from God, family and friends.

Blog EntryFriday Five - Something MoreJan 25, '08 4:51 AM
for everyone

This week's theme is SOMETHING MORE . . . there are things and events in life that make such an impact and difference in the quality of our lives or enriching and fulfilling us as in a dream job or a special gift of little monetary value rich in sentiment . . . something more that was missing before.

Elaborate as much or as little as you want!

1. My "something more" as a child . . . could be a special toy, a gift, a pet, a person, an event or whatever . . .   I think my 1st pen pal: Lori McLaughing.  I started pen paling when I was 8.  Got inspired from a program called "The Big Blue Marble" and with the help of my English teacher I learned to write in English to my new friend.  She was from PA and we kept in touch for years until we graduated from High School.  Then we lost contact as she enter to college.  But that 1st letter changed my perspective of life, showing that there's more than just what was around me.

2. My "something more" as a teenager . . . a moment, a friend, a teacher, an event, a special piece of jewelry or whatever . . .  My 1st "puppy love".  I was not allowed to date and in fact my 1st boyfriend happened when I was 25 y/o.  But that 1st "puppy love" at 14 inspired a lot of things, specially, got me writting my 1st poems and short stories, which later in High School and University received some awards.

3. "Something more" from my school days . . . a teacher, a class, an event, an accomplishment, a person, or whatever . . . that made a huge difference . . .  I think I have said this before, but just the fact that I was able to enter the University and specially University of PR (the most recognized in PR and not too easy to enter) was something that impact my life.  Doctors never thought I was going to make it to my teens and here I was a young adult, studying to become a Nurse!  Following the examples of those nurses that helped me so many times when I was sick.

4. My "something more" as an adult . . .  Hmm...  So many things as an adult.  But may be the biggest "something more" is my husband.  He is my teacher, my friend, my brother...  So many things that I can't say or I'll spent all day writing.  But he's definitively my something more as an adult.

5. My future "something more" . . . something dreamed about but not yet achieved, accomplished, purchased or experienced.  I think that will be having children.  I really want to experience it.  To be able of having a little bundle of joy inside, moving around and then having she or he in your arms...  That's the most wonderful thing.  May be is because doctors say I can't, that's why I really want it to happen, so I can prove to them that they were wrong again.

Blog EntryFriday Five - The times of my lifeJan 18, '08 9:26 AM
for everyone

This week's theme THE TIMES OF MY LIFE was provided by Lisa.

What are the five events of your life that have had the biggest impact on you . . . whether it was personal and/or public event? Elaborate as much or as little as you want!

Very interesting theme this week.  I have done this several times, specially when I've been in therapy.    Through the years this list have change sevaral times also.  What I consider significantly in my life when I was a teen may be now is not as important.  So this is my new version.  Had to think about it a lot.

1. When my maternal grandmother die.  She was the only person that I loved so much.  She taught me to crochet and do a lot of things.  She also taught me music (she was a professional music teacher and choir master).  Also she taught me the value of having a close spiritual relationship with life and the power of praying.

2.
When I finish my Nursing Dregree - It was very special because I showed that I can do anything I want if I try for it.  Doctors always told my mom that I was not going to live to be adult and here I was becoming a full adult with a job already as an Oncology nurse (I started to work even before graduating).

3. My 1st marriage.  He taught me to love someone and at the same time to hate someone.  He taught me later to become a survivor of physical and emotional abuse.  Thanks to him I became a stronger person.

4. 2004 in general.  That year I travel the 1st time to Egypt.  Met my 2nd husband.  Lost my babies.  Had a great time on Palmettos.  Had several health scares and got out of them all.  All this not in the exact order because I can't remember all the dates.

5. Meeting my now husband.  He's the most worderful person I have ever met and he has change my life.  He's teaching me to trust again and to see that we can have a brighter future even if the past has been so dark.

Blog EntryFriday Five - Prized PosetionsJan 12, '08 2:04 AM
for everyone

This week's theme is PRIZED POSSESSIONS . . . the "stuff/things" that are very important to you in bringing you smiles, happiness and pleasure in your life . . . not necessarily necessities . . .

The theoretical question . . . Your place of residence is on fire, you can safely take and save five things (not counting living things like family, pets, just STUFF) . . . what are these things? If you care to elaborate, why are they so important to you?

1. My shuttles!!!  Tatting is my passion and I have a pretty decent collection of them.  A couple of years ago I lost EVERYTHING and a group of friends recued my shuttles on E-Bay.  Thanks to them I have my babies back and I'll never loose them again!

2. I guess I'll save also my DVDs.  I have them all neatly in binders, so they're easy to carry.  Not only I have the Matrix, but a Stephen King collection of movies, Harry Potter, Lord of the Ring and like 100 other titles.

3. My walker.  Without it I can't walk fast and anyway it will help me to carry my treasures!  lol

4. My bobbin lace pillow.  I lost the pillow with which I learned bobbin lace and this one was a gift from a family of a woman that die and all her lace stuff was "abandoned" in a closet.  My BIL told the widower about me been a lacer and he gift me her pillow, which is over 40 years old!  So now this is my pillow and a treasure!

5. My 'puter will be the last thing I'll take with me that is precious!  In there I have practically all my life: friends, works, documents, music, videos, etc, etc...  This is my link to the outside world, my way of communicating with my family and meeting so many wonderful friends.

As you can see all I treasure now (that is material) I can easily carry it with me in a case of emergency.  I've been living a gypsy-style life for the last 5-6 years so I know how to pack when is time to run.  lol

Blog EntryFriday Five - Time TravelJan 4, '08 12:06 PM
for everyone

Time Travel . . . judging by the number of television series, movies, books created on the subject, each providing it's own twist on the subject, it is a fascination that has captured the imagination of people in all walks of life through the ages.

This week's Friday Five questions pose various scenarios within the theme of "Time Travel" . . . elaborate or not as much as you like.

1. You can go back and change an event in history . . . What would the historial event be, what would you change and what outcome would your actions have?  I don't know if I'll change the history of the world but I would like to change something in my personal history.  A beautiful friendship was ruined by a man that got between my best friend and me.  If I could go back to that time I would have just not pay attention too much to this guy, warn my best friend about him and tell her that I love her no matter what.  *sigh*  I really miss her but I lost contact with her like for 12 years now and haven't found her online.

2. You can go back in time, but you can't change anything . . . where would you go?  I would like to go to 600 AD near Mecca, Saudi Arabia and listen to the prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and talk with his wives and all that.  I think it would be easier then for me to understand some things.

3. You can visit the future, but you can't change anything . . . where would you go?  Future?  I'm not even sure what will happen tomorrow with me!  lol  But if there's a possibility that in the future will be a cure for Lupus I'll travel to that future and get me cured.

4. Who is the one famous person you would go back in time to visit?  I would like to go and meet Mdlle. Eleonor Riego de la Brachandiere.  She was a great lacemaker and one of the 1st in publish Tatting books.  I would like to know from where she got those ideas and patterns.  I would love to live in that time (receiving my actual pension  ) and live a rather lavish live and dedicate all my time for the laces like she did!

5. You can be any person, past or present, famous or not . . . who is it and why?  I think I would still be me.  I have learn that I have had an interesting life.  May be a little too painful physically, but I won't change for nothing the opportunities I have had like traveling and living in different countries, meeting wonderful friends and learning so many things.  May be I'll change some things and avoid some problems if I can turn back time, but definitively I would be me.

As we await the approach of a brand new year and anticipate new beginnings . . . what are the first five New Year's Resolutions?

I know you all knew this was coming . . . but here is a twist, as a bonus . . . and optional . . . top five highlights of 2007 in your life.

We are in the midst of the holiday season . . . and although the Christmas holiday and the legacy of Santa Claus have been the featured holiday, the Friday Five understands there are many other holidays celebrated around this time of year. There was no intention to omit any holiday or group from participating . . . many apologies.

Using Christmas only as an example of whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year . . . as a bonus to the five questions, talk about your holiday traditions, what they mean to you . . . whatever special memories you would like to share . . . (optional).

What are your five favorite Christmas songs or movies?

I won't use Xmas because I'm not Christian but Muslims are celebrating on December 19th or 20th (?) Eid ul-Adha.  It's a Holiday commemorating the sacrifice that Abraham was going to do with his son Ismael (according to Jew-Christian's tradition was Isaac) and God send a lamb to make the sacrifice instead.  That day Muslims sacrify a lamb or cow and share with everyone in a dinner.  Later I'll post more information about this holiday.

Anyway, my favorite things related with this holiday are:

1.  The Quran - it's the holy book of the Muslims.  Here is a video with the recitation of a verse called in English "The Throne"

2. The Message - a movie with Anthony Quinn that narrates the life of the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).  Here is a clip of the movie.  You can see it all on YouTube in 18 parts!

3. Yusuf Islam - known as Cat Stevens.  He reverted to Islam in the 70's.

4. Sami Yusuf - a great singer of Nasheed (acapella songs)

5. Mohamed Mounir - He's an Egyptian singer and a few years ago got this song.  The video has captions in English.

Santa has made his list, wrapping the gifts and packing the sled . . . we are in the midst of the mad seasonal rush to buy the perfect gift.

Since is it more blessed to give than receive, let's think about the gifts we have given over the years.

What gift have you given that was the most . . .

1. Unique - I'm tatting all the time and most of what I do I give it away.  May be this is my unique gift.  Tatting is not a very known lace and people are always in awe when they see something tatted.

2. Life Changing - One of my cousins was undecided about what to study when she entered in the university and one day while visiting her and the family I was talking a lot about my job as an Oncology Nurse.  Later to my surprise she started Nursing School.  She is now a Psychiatric Nurse and loving it.  I guess I inspired her to change and take a decision.

3. Difficult -   I'm thinking about this one.  I can give easily so it's no difficult for me to give a gift.

4. Funny -  My hubby is always talking that I'm funny and have a good sense of humor.  May be that's my funny gift.

5. Memorable - I know this is about giving gifts.  But here I have to talk about a memorable gift I receive.  It was anonimous and was the most beautiful thing I received.  Three years ago I was admited with dehydratation due to a severe hemorrage and was in the bordeline of passing to the "other side".  I received 4 pints of blood and that is what I think has been the most memorable gift I ever received.  One that saved my life.  If I could reciprocate back I'll donate blood.  I can't because of my health condition but that's a gift I'll never forget!

Thanksgiving is a time of thanks and although it is an American holiday, let's focus on being thankful . . . in the following five categories of people, who are you most thankful for in each category and why (if you care to elaborate) . . . and . . . if you can't think of a person, in it's place, something that you are thankful for . . .

1. Family - My Husband.  I have never met a man that can love as he does.

2. Public leader - None!  Sorry, but I think all the leaders right now are a bunch of corrupts that only seek for their own interest.

3. Friend - Too many to name.  All of them are special in their own way!

4. Celebrity - Not sure if to give thanks for a celebrity...  May be Bon Jovi, because his songs always make my day a brighter and romantic one.

5. Stranger - Hmmm...  I think every stranger that cross our path always teach us something and we have to give thanks for those little lessons in life.

Thanksgiving, one of America's favorite holidays is right around the corner . . . let's explore the cultural exchange of FOOD AND THE HOLIDAYS.   Since we are an international collection of friends, rather than focus on Thanksgiving, discuss your favorite holiday.

Share your recipes as an added bonus . . .

1. What is your favorite holiday . . . and why, if you care to elaborate, especially those holidays not widely known . . .

Been Puerto Rican, we love to celebrate EVERYTHING!!!  But my favorite while growing up was Xmas and Thanks Giving.  I still like to celebrate Thanks Giving with my family.  It's one of the rare days that we spent ALL day together without fighting.  lol  Well, we have a good dynamic...  It's just that we have a way of loving each other that is a little strange...  Anyway, the traditional Thanks Giving dinner in PR is turkey stuffed in different ways, rice with green pigeon peas (gandules), potato salad and for dessert anything sweet.   At home usually we prepare Puerto Rican desserts like a coconut pudding we call "Tembleque" or "Majarete" which is made with coarse rice flour, coconut milk and decorated with a lemon leaf (add a light flavor to the majarete).  My maternal grandmother used to cook the family dinner on those 2 holidays.  She pass away almost 15 years, but mom, sis Letty and I still try to preserve her way of cooking.

Now that I'm here in Egypt and I'm Muslim I'm learning to celebrate the Muslim holidays and recently we had Ramadan and with that comes a holiday of 3 days.  People make a lot of foods and specially roasted lamb.  I like a lot the lamb, prepared in anyway.  So now hubby is learning to love Thanks Giving and here in Egypt I make roasted turkey stuffed with sweet potatoes and veggies, rice with chick peas (I haven't seen pigeon peas) and this year I think I'll make tembleque or majarete.  Last year I made PR rice pudding.

Your four favorite foods or drinks associated with this holiday . . . appetizer, main course, side dish, dessert . . . your choice . . .

2.  Turkey Stuffed Puerto Rican way - stuffed with "mofongo", that's mashed green plantains, tons of garlic and toasted pork skin bits.  Or stuffed with cassava, onions and garlic.

3. Tembleque - made of coconut milk, sugar, cornstarch, and sprinkled with cinnamon.

4. Rice with green pigeon peas (gandules).

5. Coquito - it's a drink made with condense milk, coconut milk, cinnamon and rum.  Very similar to the eggnog.

If you are sharing recipes . . . why not join Deb's Recipe Friday Tour . . . on Multiply and here is the link to her 360 page, although I'm not sure if she is still posting the Recipe Friday Tour there . . . and if you are sharing chicken or herb-related recipes, participate on Seanymph's Multiply page for Chicken Tuesday or Herb Thursday . . . a great way to make new friends!
